 The School's Location:

St Michael's occupies a pleasant open site in the north east of Barnsley, between Athersley and Carlton. It shares a campus with one other comprehensive school and a large primary school.

Barnsley is renowned for its friendly people and for its good, old-fashioned Yorkshire hospitality. The town is easily reached from all parts of the United Kingdom because of its ideal Motorway connections. The M1 passes right through the Borough, and it is close to three major airports.

Barnsley sits close to the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. The western end of the Borough is within the breathtaking scenery of the Peak District National Park.

Pastoral

"a knowledge of self which leads to sensitivity and understanding towards others"

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good

(1Cor. 12:7)

Central in our approach to young people is a conviction that St Michael's is a caring school that encourages students to develop an increasing maturity in the exercise of responsibility for self and others. All teachers are responsible for a form group where children are encouraged to work together and support each other, appreciating the differences and similarities that exist and understanding the uniqueness of the individual.

Our pastoral system is alert to signals of distress among students and both form teachers and Senior Tutors will work together with other staff to resolve any possible areas of conflict that arise. Our belief in good discipline stems from developing an attitude of responsibility and maturity that allows students to respect themselves first and, in knowledge of self, to reach out to others sensitively and with understanding.

As students develop in this supportive atmosphere, they are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for others in the school. Our Prefect system allows older students to act as positive role models for younger students as they work alongside them in the School Council or the many other areas of school life that they become involved with.

We have a strong Learning Support Department that bestrides academic and pastoral activity and successfully works to develop a whole-person understanding of students' many emotional, behavioural and intellectual needs. Strategies for behaviour management are further developed through the Learning Mentors who address these issues in a non-judgemental manner designed to help students take responsibility for their actions.
