Physical Education
As a National Curriculum subject, Physical Education is compulsory for boys and girls throughout their time at St Michael's.
In line with our Mission Statement and the
We offer pupils a broad and balanced programme which is concerned with the principles behind good health and physical fitness and with participation in a range of physical activities designed to satisfy the needs, abilities and interests of individual children.
In Years 7, 8 and 9, the pupils will experience four of the practical areas that the National Curriculum recommends. At the end of the Key Stage pupils will be given a Level of Attainment as prescribed by the National Curriculum. The level achieved will be determined by a pupil's ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding involved in the areas of activity they have participated in, namely athletics, dance, games, gymnastics.
Although specific games are taught such as Football, Netball and Hockey, the emphasis is very much on those principles that are common to a number of activities. We would also expect pupils to develop a sense of fair play and see the need to work together in a team.
In Years 10 and 11 our aim is to encourage pupils to develop their interests to a far greater depth. The new Sports Hall gives us greater flexibility and allows pupils to make a choice of which activities they will take.
Our pupils have the opportunity to study Physical Education as a GCSE Option in Years 10 and 11. This consists of 3 components: Assessment of Practical Performance (50% of marks) Written Paper (40% of marks) and Analysis of Performance (10%).
Extra-curricular activities play an important part in the P.E. programme; inter-school and inter-form matches for Years 7-11 are regularly played throughout the year. Touring Dance Companies are invited into school whenever possible to work with the children providing opportunities for the expression of ideas. The school is also developing links with outside agencies and clubs to help pupils combine a healthy and active lifestyle when they leave school.
