St Michael's Catholic and Church of England High School - Following Jesus Together

Music

Music plays an important part in the religious and social life of the school.  The greatest emphasis is placed on practical music making in the classroom.  Pupils are introduced to the language of music through performing, particularly with electronic instruments, as this is the most effective way of learning about music.  Appreciation work covering classical and popular styles, as well as music from other cultures, supplements the practical side of the subject in providing a balanced view of the world of music. Theory work is approached through practical application.  Workshops and demonstration events will provide additional stimuli for classroom activities.

Music is offered as a GCSE subject, with equal emphasis on performance, composition, appraising and listening skills.  Candidates produce a portfolio of original compositions and arrangements, take part in solo and ensemble performances and complete a written paper on which they answer questions covering history, style and theory of music.

Peripatetic music teachers regularly give lessons, providing instruction on strings, percussion, keyboard, voice, guitar, woodwind and brass.  Pupils already having lessons on these instruments may continue tuition throughout their school life and they are given every opportunity to participate in the musical side of school life.
