Learning Support for Individual Needs
Children who have learning difficulties are supported in all curriculum areas by the Special Needs Co-ordinator who guides all staff in delivering a differentiated, curriculum approach that meets the Individual Needs of all pupils, thus continuing our Entitlement Policy for all, irrespective of ability or disability. A wide interpretation of Special Education Need has been adopted.
Pupils are targeted according to national guidelines and with the involvement of feeder schools. Opportunities are made available for some youngsters to attend Summer School programmes to support literacy learning during the transition from Year 6 to 7 (Key Stage 2 to 3).
The needs of children with difficulties are met in a variety of ways. These enable children to participate in all normal activities in the school. This includes support within the classroom, out of lesson help, or practical information and advice for individual teachers of subject areas, thus allowing all pupils the opportunity to work within their own level of attainment at National Curriculum Key Stages 3 or 4.
Visiting advisory teachers, specialists and other external agencies are involved in some aspects of curriculum support. There is a genuine whole-school approach towards the key areas within the Government?s Code of Practice and Disability Discrimination Act. We support the underlying principles of inclusive education and will continue to respond to both the challenges and opportunities that the Code and related Acts present. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their children?s learning and assessment procedures.
