Art and Design
Art and Design offers the pupils an aesthetic, creative experience as well as giving them confidence to make informed judgements and opinions on artistic conventions and influences.
Throughout Year 7, 8 and 9 a wide variety of techniques and skills are taught and extended, including 2D and 3D work, printing and some art history. Pupils are encouraged to regularly review their work and progress, both individually and as a group.
Drawing skills are enhanced through sketchbook homework. Research homework aids the investigative process of the National Curriculum Attainment targets. ICT is used as a research tool.
The coursework covers drawing and painting, printing and ceramics. Contextual studies are integral to the course and pupils need to apply the art influences of other cultures' artists and craftspeople in their work.
The final GCSE grade consists of 60% coursework and 40% terminal test over a ten hour period.
Pupils benefit from having some basic equipment at home in order to produce or complete preparatory work.
A mock exam in Year 11 is in place to help prepare pupils for their Art GCSE exam and will also count towards coursework.
A sketchbook is an essential part of the Art GCSE course and pupils are expected to provide their own in most cases.
