11 Jul 2006 - E-mentoring success
E-mentoring and the trip to Sheffield University
Kath Bray was the organiser of the e-mentoring programme and she selected 12 students from the Aimhigher group to do the mentoring. The lucky 12 were Luke Dalton, James Murray, Chris Shaw, Jake Johnson, Scarlett Vodden, Naomi Brammer, Ian Sullivan, Lee Braithwaite, Nicola Haigh, Anna Neto, Laura Wordsworth and Tim Murphy.
Every week students from Sheffield Hallam University would come in during lunchtime and talk to us about our options when leaving school. It was really useful. Also we emailed our mentors either at school or at home. Part of the programme was to finally visit Sheffield Hallam University and collect a certificate for the e-mentoring which we did on Tuesday, 11th July.
When we arrived at the university we met up with our mentors and were introduced to the founders of the programme. We were then shown around the campus, seeing things like the gym, lecture rooms, the library, and shops where students could just buy supplies when needed. This was very useful and showed us what university life was like.
Then we were taken to the computer room to do the Stanford Test. This helped us choose courses we might want to take while at university. We then did a quiz. This was designed to help you navigate around a university website to find information about courses, open days and much more.
Then we were awarded our certificates and thanked for taking part in the mentoring programme. Everyone who was involved really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
