18 May 2006 - Pop Factor Final

The finals of POP FACTOR took place this evening. Forty-eight of our students practised hard during the Easter hols and gave us a fantastic evening's entertainment.

The judges were His Worshipful The Mayor, Councillor Joe Hayward; The Mayoress, Pauline Haigh; Fr James McCaskill, Vicar of Lundwood and recent award winning star of Priest Idol; Chris Rooke from PADS, the BMBC Arts Development agency; and Esther Wise, St Michael's drama teacher.
Hosts for the evening were Suzanne Plimmer, who dreamt up the project and has managed it from its inception, and Neil Fletcher, one of our Maths teachers, whose droll and witty comments as anchorman for the evening gained him many followers.

The evening kicked off with two group routines - "Sway", which all the contestants danced to, and "Ugly", which they all sang. We were then treated to a couple of numbers by the professional group, Sweet Rebellion, who had worked hard with the contestants during their week-long project in the Easter holidays. The contestants used this time to get dressed up in their costumes and to prepare for their part in the proceedings.

The twenty acts that followed gave us over two hours of brilliant entertainment, with a huge range of acts - soloists, duets, groups - and a diverse range of styles from Country and Western to heavy chick-rock. The entrants ranged from Y7 through to Y10.

The costumes and quality of performance were judged and commented on after each act had finished. The eventual winners in each category were rewarded with vouchers and all contestants received a photo as a memory of their participation.

At the end of the evening, some very proud mums and dads took home exhausted students who will not forget this evening in a long time.

Top quote of the evening: "This was the best £3 I have ever spent - the entertainment was fantastic and just goes to show how much talent there is at St Michael's!"

The list of winners is soon to appear on this page, as your editor forgot to write them all down!!! We will also try to get some pictures onto our Gallery when they have been downloaded.

A DVD of the evening will be produced, so if you were not one of the lucky 393 to buy a ticket but you want to experience the quality of talent on show, you can purchase one after half term. Keep an eye out for further details.
