5 May 2006 - Gifted and Talented

Some interesting things happened over Easter and towards the back end of last term.

Our Gifted and Talented (G&T) Learning Mentor, Suzanne Plimmer, gained funding for a big Easter holiday project, and has supported a number of our students who undertook various other projects.

Read on below to see what they got up to:
England Expects

Four of our year 9 students completed this project with Gary Pollard and he was very pleased with the standards achieved. He reckons that if they continue in this way, they could hit a level 8 in the future. Lindy is to display their achievements in the main reception.

Forensic Science Workshops

60 students from KS3 and KS4 took part in the forensic science workshops based around a scene of crime. They learned how to analyse fingerprints, hair samples and DNA. The course was run by an ex-officer from the Police who now works in the community. Feedback from this event was excellent and we hope to use them again in the future.

Pop Factor - Easter Holiday Project

This was extremely successful and over subscribed. In the end it came down to the luck of the draw as to who was accepted. The week long project ran in the first week of the Easter holidays and was attended by 50 students plus 2 technicians. The end result can be seen at the Grand Showcase Final on Thursday 18th May - tickets will go on sale Monday 1st May. The students have learned how to sing, dance and choreograph and the results are amazing. The show itself promises to be very exciting and the calibre of their performances is outstanding.
All of the students are to be featured on the website www.sweetrebellion.com.

Thomas Hutchinson and Hannah Jones were the technicians responsible for stage lighting, sound and recording. They did an excellent job and Thomas has taken this on board as a project to do in his own time. The proofs are excellent. Thomas has now volunteered to complete the editing in his lunchtimes, using a suite of software that school has recently bought.

Games Design Course

At the same time as Pop Factor was running, two of our G&T Cohort went on a computer games design course at Foulstone CLC. The feedback from their tutor has been great - he could not believe that Mark Kelly and Gavin Stevenson were only Y8 considering the quality of work they achieved. He now wants to come into school and deliver more projects for us. You can look at the work they produced by visiting the website at www.barnsleyclcs.org and clicking on Space Maze and Space Battle.
